- The English physicist, Isaac Newton's (1643 - 1727) gravitation was the definitive
- solution to the problem of planetary movements. Because Newton could not observe
- parallax in the stars he concluded that they must be tremendously far away. But
- if they were so distant, they could not reflect the Sun's light and must
- therefore be luminous themselves, just like our Sun.

- Newton was a professor of mathematics at Cambridge University.

- In 1687 Newton published his main work, 'Principia', which presented the law of gravity and celestial mechanics so
- perfectly that they would not be challenged until the 20th century by Einstein.
